I'm donating 5057 BTC to charitable causes! Introducing The Pineapple Fund

Main Post:

Hello!

I remember staring at bitcoin a few years ago. When bitcoin broke single digits for the first time, I thought that was a triumphant moment for bitcoin. I watched and admired the price jump to $15.. $20.. $30.. wow!

Today, I see $17,539 per BTC. I still don't believe reality sometimes. Bitcoin has changed my life, and I have far more money than I can ever spend. My aims, goals, and motivations in life have nothing to do with having XX million or being the mega rich. So I'm doing something else: donating the majority of my bitcoins to charitable causes. I'm calling it 🍍 The Pineapple Fund.

Yes, donating ~$86 million worth of bitcoins to charities :)

So far, The Pineapple Fund has/is:

  • Donated $1 million to Watsi, an impressively innovative charity building technology to finance universal healthcare.
  • Donated $1 million to The Water Project, a charity providing sustainable water projects to suffering communities in Africa
  • Donating $1 million to the EFF, defending rights and privacy of internet users, fighting for net neutrality, and far far more
  • Donated $500k to BitGive Foundation, a charity building projects that leverage bitcoin and blockchain technology for global philanthropy.

If you know a registered nonprofit charity, please encourage them to apply on the fund's website! While I prefer supporting registered charities, I am open to supporting charitable causes as well. Check out the website :)

Please share your suggestions for Fidelity bond funds for IRA

Main Post:

Hi all! I’m a 46F planning to invest in bond funds for the first time using IRA money and am looking for Fidelity recs. I currently contribute the maximum to my 457 and 403 (both very aggressive). Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Top Comment: Always need to know goals, risk tolerance, and timeline before recommending a fund. Different types of bonds can serve the related functions of diversification, capital preservation, non-correlation with stocks, and income. This article is a great rundown of various types (in Vanguard): What Bond Fund Should You Hold If you’re not sure, the default should probably be a total bond fund like FXNAX

Please convince me to not invest 100% in QQQ/QQQM/comparable ETFs

Main Post:

I currently have everything invested 50/50 in a low cost SP index fund, and a ETF that is comparable to QQQ (has outperformed it a bit). I've been doing this for a few years now and the returns on the ETF are so much greater that it's been responsible for 60% of all of my returns, which is wild to me.

Please convince me that I should not change it up to 100% in this ETF. My reasoning for going 50/50 was that the ETF was so pricy already that it seemed like it may underperform; but it looks like interest rates are going to go lower some time, so it seems like if anything, the ETF may outperform when that happens.

My time horizon is long, my risk tolerance is high, emotions are in check (I welcome a potential downturn in order to get more in at lower levels), and I am highly knowledgeable about investing.

Why should I not go all in on the ETF?

Top Comment: Do it. I’ll go 100% VT and we shall check back in 10 years time 📈📅

Please explain how BND works

Main Post:

New to bonds and bond ETFs. Let me know if I have this right. I buy X shares of BND at, say $72. I currently earn 4.57% on this amount while I hold it. I’m retiring soon and would use these interest payments as income.

Questions:

  • How often is interest paid?
  • Should I hold BND in a taxable or pre-tax accounts?
  • What causes the share price of BND to rise or fall?

Top Comment: BND is just a collection of bonds. Imagine if you bought a new bond everyday for a year. The market value rises and falls with the prices of the bonds in the fund. If interest rates rise, existing bonds will lose value, and the NAV will drop, all else equal, and vice versa. Distributions are made monthly, though you could also sell shares if you needed money. Stocks in taxable, bonds in IRAs. Unlike with stocks (hold TSM only), there are many valid fixed income options - BND, MM, CDs, individual bonds, TIPS, etc. Edit: Total return chart here: https://www.morningstar.com/funds/xnas/bnd/performance

New Investor: Please review my portfolio

Main Post:

Thank you for taking the time to read my post and for any critiques or suggestions.

A little background of my finances:

I am a 26 yo old PGY-1 medical resident and I do not get a 401k

no debts of any kind

3000 dollars to invest now and I have a schwab roth IRA

I have been doing a lot of reading and determined that I will start saving as much as I can to max out my investments in a roth IRA since I dont get a 401k from my employer.

I am inclined to invest into a target year fund like the 2055 index schwab fund but I think I can tolerate more risk and would rather not have 10% in bonds until I make a higher income as an attending physician.

Would this portfolio be better in terms of aggression and diversity?

60% SWPPX

30% SWISX

10% SCHD (I was looking for a good quality dividend paying fund). Or should I replace this with small cap index fund or add to international fund instead.

A couple of question also: should I use a S&P500 tracker instead of a total stock market tracker? What about SNXFX which is a schwab 1000 index fund? It seems to follow the S&P really closely so I am not sure why this fund is any different or even exists.

Thank you again for any advice!

Top Comment:

Given that Schwab now offers zero commission investing, why not keep it simple and just allocate the total amount to $VT?

If you want some bond exposure, you can look at $BND.

You could, if you would like to express some views add tiny allocations to sectors ($VGT) or asset classes ($VNQ).

However, remember, the more ETFs you own the more decisions you will be forced to make so if you want just broad equity exposure and not want to think about it much, pick $VT which has an incredibly low expense ratio and just go with that for the near future.

You can always start buying bonds and adding other asset classes later.
